Searches

The description of the archives has changed radically in recent years. Consequently the finding aids, presenting the result of the validation and the key to utilisation, are available in various forms.

The holdings which are newly validated (in part retrogressively) cover the Cantonal Archives in a online finding aids (CMI STAR, see below).

Some other finding aids are only accessible in the reading room whereas others are available as pdf documents. The overview of the Archives shows which finding aids are available for which holdings (see below).

The terms of use for archive documents can be found in the chapter "Use".

Searching in the overview of the Archives:

The overviews are shown as a table containing the following columns:

  • Number
Number of the collection: this enables our staff to make the archive documents available to you easily and rapidly.
  • Finding aids PDF

Searches in STAR

For over 10 years, the Cantonal Archives Graubünden have been using the archive software CMI STAR to validate their holdings. Users thus have a search tool at their disposal with which they can easily search for documents in all electronically validated holdings.

Data on archive documents is entered in different fields of the program. The users can conveniently carry out searches from home according to their area of interest. However, only the description of the archive documents is available here, the documents themselves must be consulted at the premises of the Cantonal Archives.

You can search for holdings via different search options: either via navigation in the archive tectonics or via a search function.

A quick guide to searches in the archive program CMI STAR can be found under this Link.

Searches in the archives portal

The Cantonal Archives Graubünden have been connected to Archives online since 2011. This is a portal that allows you to search for archived material in different Swiss archives. In Archives online, the freely accessible meta data and documents of the connected archives databases are made available via a search mask. As a special feature, Archives online supports simultaneous searches in different archives.

A quick guide to searches in the archives portal can be found under this Link.

Searches in the reference library

In the reference library of the Cantonal Archives you can find the most important media for studying the history of Graubünden and for genealogical research along with source and reference books.

The reference library is situated in the reading room. Media can be located via the card index and the Aleph Library Catalogue.

Media from the reference library may only be consulted in the reading room and cannot be borrowed.

The Aleph Library Catalogue is part of the Library Network of Graubünden. Books of the Cantonal Archives are shown under the column "Holdings" in the list of results. Using the filter, you can narrow down your search to media kept at the Cantonal Archives.
